South Broad Street - Gale Street
Broad Street is Edenton's primary business district. This area has been theme to multiple eateries and shop since the 1700s.
This first section, running from King Street to Water Street was once known as Cheapside. It was named after the market and commercial section of Elizabethan London, which was also called Cheapside.
The word Cheap [chepe] was a medieval term that designated a place for trading and merchant activity.
It catered to sailors, dock workers and stevedores with a collection of grog shops, taverns, and ordinaries.
The entire block burned to the ground in 1893 in the largest industrial fire in Edenton’s history. This fire destroyed many Revolutionary War wooden buildings. After the fire, the area was rebuilt into a more respectable business district.
